What should I do if USPS rejects my change of address?

If USPS does not accept your change of address, review the exact message before submitting another request. An address-format problem, incomplete identity verification, and an ineligible request require different next steps.

Check your mailing details

  • Compare the new address with the complete address issued to your Traveling Mailbox account.
  • Include your assigned mailbox number and check the street, city, state, and ZIP Code.
  • Check the old address, recipient names, move type, and forwarding dates.
  • If USPS suggests a change that removes your mailbox number or changes the delivery location, ask our team to confirm the proper address format before proceeding.

Follow the USPS identity-verification instructions

USPS identity verification is separate from your Traveling Mailbox Form 1583 verification. If online verification is unsuccessful, follow the USPS instructions for visiting a Post Office with acceptable identification and any required email or barcode. Completing Form 1583 does not bypass USPS’s requirements.

Check whether the request is eligible

Some changes require an in-person visit or are restricted. For example, redirecting an individual’s mail from a business address and changing an address away from a commercial mail receiving agency have special limitations. Ask USPS to review the specific old address and request type rather than repeatedly submitting the same request.

Who can help?

  • Traveling Mailbox: We can help confirm your assigned address, mailbox number, and mailbox setup.
  • USPS: USPS must resolve verification, approval, eligibility, and processing issues for its change-of-address service.
