Who should I notify of my new mailing address?

Notify each person or organization that sends you mail. A USPS change of address can help redirect eligible mail during the transition, but you should also update the mailing address on your accounts directly.

Start with important correspondence

  • Banks and financial providers: Checking and savings accounts, credit cards, lenders, retirement accounts, and investment providers.
  • Employers and benefits providers: Payroll correspondence, tax documents, pensions, and benefit notices.
  • Insurance companies: Policy correspondence and billing notices.
  • Healthcare providers: Billing and other mailed correspondence.
  • Government agencies: Follow each agency’s own instructions for updating a mailing address.

Update everyday senders

  • Magazine and newspaper subscriptions, clubs, and professional memberships.
  • Online retailers and recurring subscription shipments.
  • Friends, relatives, schools, charities, and other organizations that mail to you.
  • For business mail: customers, vendors, payment processors, and professional service providers.

Use the correct address field

Enter your Traveling Mailbox address where the sender accepts a mailing address. A mailing address is not automatically a residential, physical business, registered-agent, or legal-residency address. If an organization asks for more than one address, confirm what each field requires. Review our Important Resources before changing banking, tax, voting, or identification records.

Keep a simple progress checklist

  1. Copy your full assigned address, including your mailbox number.
  2. Update the sender through its official account page or support team.
  3. Check whether mailing, billing, and shipping addresses are stored separately.
  4. Record the date, confirmation, and when the sender expects the change to take effect.
  5. Check the address on future mail and follow up with senders still using the old one.

For a temporary trip, decide which senders should use Traveling Mailbox only while you are away, and plan any later updates. Ending temporary USPS forwarding does not change an address you gave directly to a sender.

See the USPS forwarding guide for forwarding limitations and why direct sender updates matter.
